Overview

This book examines the film Mahler auf der Couch (Mahler on the Couch, 2010) by Percy and Felix Adlon with regard to its use of Gustav Mahler's music as a soundtrack. A detailed analysis of the film's soundtrack is carried out in order to clarify whether and to what extent the use of Mahler's music in the film reveals a deeper engagement with it on the part of the filmmakers. To this end, a brief overview of the history of Mahler's reception from his lifetime to the present day is used to shed light on the most important elements of his compositions. In addition, the close connection between Mahler and the medium of film in general will be explained.
