OverviewThere are two stages to the development of a mushroom: the vegetative phase, during which the mushroom grows and accumulates organic matter, and the fruiting phase, during which mushroom bodies (fruiting bodies) are produced. Moshrooms thrive in woodland environments because of the cool, moist air. Some types of mushrooms can even be grown in these conditions. In order to grow mushrooms, the strategy is to introduce a desired variety onto a growing medium and to promote its growth so that fruiting bodies can be formed eventually. There are four stages to the process of growing mulberries: getting a hold of and maintaining a culture of mushroom tissue (known as mycelium) of the species targeted for cultivation. Tissue culture is a lot like cutting a plant. Some growers begin with mushroom spores, which resemble the seeds of a plant; however, this is not the norm. Using a small amount of the tissue culture to begin some mushroom spawn (a kind of mushroom starter), which is usually grown on a small quantity of sterilized grain or sawdust. Using the spout to introduce mushroom mycelium into an organic material or substrate, chosen to support the formation of fruiting bodies.
