Reviews

'Your mouth is filthy.' So opens this revolting volume in the Gross Human Body in Action: Augmented Reality series (6 titles), setting a putrid tone for the chapters to follow. While the book contains a few pleasant photos of smiling children and families, it is dominated by closeups of tongues, teeth, and lips, often marred by sores, tartar, or dripping saliva. By delving into disgusting aspects of the mouth, the text fuels an underlying approbation of dental hygiene. In addition to the aforementioned photos, readers will be treated to pictures--three of which produce 3D images when viewed through the free Lerner AR app--and discussions of bacteria, mouth amoebas, taste buds, and cavities. A bullet list of 'Gross Mouth Facts' wraps up this rudimentary, interestingly repugnant health lesson.--Booklist -- Journal (10/1/2020 12:00:00 AM) Blood, guts, and gore abound in these guides to the human body. Photos show scabs, frostbite, ulcers, and pimples; diagrams reveal the layers of skin or the digestive tract. Captions provide additional information. The writing style will appeal to young readers, with descriptions that are clever and humorous. In addition to the vivid images conjured by the prose, there is the added feature of augmented reality. Using the app, readers can watch blood cells moving, stomach acid squirting, or a cavity forming. Back matter includes a glossary, further reading, and a list of gross facts. VERDICT Perfect for updating anatomy collections; these books will ooze right off the shelves.--School Library Journal -- Journal (11/1/2020 12:00:00 AM)
