OverviewThe North East of England has an early history of Roman roads and the ‘Great Road to the North’, and in 1957 an approval was given by the Ministry of Transport for the construction of Doncaster Bypass A1M, which was the first scheme on the A1 Trunk Road to meet motorway standards. It was the start of the great motorway era in the North East that was to include the upgrading of the entire A1 to dual carriageway and later motorway. This history is mostly a story of success achieved through tremendous endeavour and good will. There can be no doubt that the motorways in the North East have made an enormous contribution to prosperity of today’s region and the United Kingdom and those involved can be justly proud. This book is by way of a tribute to them.
