The motorman who understands his business is able to operate the cars that are put in his charge with much less danger of accident, and with less power and less wear on the equipment, than a man who simply knows how to get his car over the road on time. This book is not only in tended to explain the electrical part of an electric motor car, but to give some general instruction and advice to those who desire to make this work their livelihood. It is based on the experience gathered for a number of years in the electric railway field, instructing motormen in their duties and work, and on results and observations made on roads in practical life. To explain some electrical effects it has been necessary to adopt a few comparisons, which, while not exactly correct from a scientific standpoint, give the reader a clear picture of what is meant.
