The Morning After September

Overview

What happens when you wake up married to your worst enemy and can't remember how you got there? Olivia Chen has built her career on control, precision, and winning cases. But when she wakes up in an unfamiliar penthouse wearing a wedding ring with no memory of the past three years, her perfectly ordered world shatters. The man standing in the doorway with coffee and that infuriatingly gentle smile? Jake Morrison, the rival attorney she's been battling in court for years. Except he's not acting like her enemy. He's acting like her husband. Jake knows something is catastrophically wrong the moment Olivia looks at him with fear instead of love. The woman who kissed him goodbye yesterday, who knows every scar on his body and every secret in his heart, is gone. In her place is the sharp-edged adversary he remembers from years ago - the one who didn't trust him, didn't love him, and definitely didn't marry him in a small ceremony last September. As doctors confirm retrograde amnesia with no guaranteed recovery, Jake faces an impossible choice: let Olivia go and spare her the confusion, or fight for a marriage she doesn't remember choosing. As Olivia investigates her own life like one of her cases, she discovers the woman she became over those lost three years - softer, happier, braver. When fragments of memory start returning, they're not the romantic moments she expected. They're darker, more complicated, and they suggest her amnesia might not be as accidental as everyone believes. SAMPLE READING: The first thing Olivia noticed was the light. Not the thin gray wash that usually filtered through her apartment blinds, but genuine sunlight - golden and warm, pooling across unfamiliar white sheets. Her head throbbed with each heartbeat, a dull percussion that made thinking feel like wading through mud. She pressed her palm against her temple and tried to remember last night. Nothing came. She tried for yesterday. Still nothing. The panic arrived slowly, then all at once - a cold rush that had her sitting upright despite the way it made her skull scream in protest. The bedroom was wrong. Everything was wrong. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked Central Park from what had to be at least the thirtieth floor. The furniture was masculine and modern, all clean lines and expensive materials. She looked down at herself. Black silk pajamas that definitely weren't hers. And on her left hand, catching the morning light - a wedding ring. The band was platinum, elegant and simple, with small diamonds circling halfway around. It fit perfectly, worn enough to suggest it had been there awhile. She threw back the covers and stood too quickly, grabbing the nightstand as the room tilted. When her vision cleared, she moved toward the dresser, searching for clues. A photo of a golden retriever wearing a bow tie. A watch she didn't recognize. Car keys to a Tesla. And there, face-down in a leather frame - she turned it over and her stomach dropped. The woman in the photo was definitely her. Laughing, her head thrown back in a way Olivia Chen never laughed. She was wearing a white dress, simple and stunning, and a man's arms were around her waist, holding her like she was precious. The bedroom door opened. Olivia spun around, heart hammering, and found herself face-to-face with Jake Morrison - the attorney she'd been professionally destroying for three years. He stood in the doorway holding two coffee mugs, barefoot in gray sweatpants, looking at her like she was the answer to every question he'd ever asked. ""Hey,"" he said softly. ""You're up early. How's your head?"" Olivia stared. ""What am I doing here?"" Her voice came out hoarse, unfamiliar. His expression shifted, concern replacing warmth. ""Liv? What's wrong?""
