The possession of some such map, or plan, or chart as this, will give you a certain sense of security, which will inspire you with self-possession and confidence, and contribute also toward preserving the scientific character of your knowledge, and impressing that scientific character upon your practice. With a view to this last point--the scientific character of your acquisitions--I would, in passing, point out two works well worthy of occupying a place on the shelves of a young practitioner of superior capacity and pretensions--the admirable Leading Cases of the late Mr. John William Smith, of which a new edition, carefully edited, with additional notes, by my friends, Messrs. Keating and Willes, is nearly ready; and Mr. Herbert Broom's Selections of Legal Maxims, Classified and Illustrated, of which a second edition has just been published. It is a work of great merit, and well adapted to direct the student's eye, steadily, to the great principles on which the law is founded, as exhibited in the practical working of its details.
