Overview

Astounding historical fiction based on a true story. Nova Scotia, 1871: Annetta Stewart boards a ship bound for the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu) in the South Pacific, unaware she is travelling to a life of loss and a trial of her own beliefs. Leaving everything and everyone she has ever known, Annetta is young, has her new husband by her side, and is going with love in her heart. But will it be enough? Soon, the dangers become real. Slavers in the islands bring consequences that shake the couple to their core. Annetta must decide if she is strong enough to stay. Will the light or dark win out in the hard truths she must face about her purpose in life? Based on actual events, The Missionary's Wife is a moving and powerful novel about sacrifice, love, acceptance, partnership, and the courage to live life despite the challenges we face. Claire McGregor paints the beauty of the islands as a character in itself, and asks, How far would you go for what you believe in? Fans of adventure and historical fiction will love this novel by Claire McGregor.

Reviews

Annetta's story is one which takes you on a deep dive into the battles between one's faith and one's reality. We are taken on an emotional, educational and at times traumatic journey, where the strength of character of our heroine shines despite all she suffers. Before reading this book, I would not have considered myself as having anything in common with late 19th century missionaries, however the author combines historical records with her own insights, creating a world we can't help but find parts of ourselves in. The missionary conquests of Vanuatu is brought alive in this well written and researched book. This story is based on true events and journals from missionaries and is furnished by a good plot and strong narrative. An informative and provocative read. I was gripped from the start... such beautiful images the author created. The story is well told, well written and the author did an amazing job depicting the life of missionaries on Erakor. The author did a beautiful job with the descriptions and bringing out the emotion. This was very, very well written. Very moving and emotional. I loved it and could see this being an excellent movie.
