OverviewA long-time collector of golden age radio programs offers a perspective about one of radio's greatest series, Suspense. Nearly all episodes of its twenty year run (1942-1962) have survived. Eighteen episodes still elude devoted hobbyists, and some may never be found. In the process of documenting the missing episodes, the author gained insights into the show's history, its near-cancellation in 1947, the behind-the-scenes maneuverings that ended the brief and half-hearted one-hour format of early 1948, the successful return of the half-hour format with a new sponsor, and the series survival through the rise of television until the final broadcast in 1962. The author details the recreations, original short stories, and performances on other radio series that help fill in the gaps of the missing performances. He explores the numerous versions of Suspense recordings, from network broadcasts, rehearsals, airchecks, home recordings, AFRS, and others. The author explains how the hobby of collecting radio programs changed through the decades, how technologies and collector attitudes of the times affected the surviving recordings, and adds other relevant facts and opinions. It's a different look at radio's outstanding theater of thrills that long-time radio fans, and especially new collectors, will enjoy.
