Overview

I have a group of dear and godly sisters called 'deaconess' in the church I'm honored to pastor, The Philadelphia Fellowship (Baptist). This Fellowship of Deaconess was without relevant guidelines, as we were assessing the leadership directives of our church. Some of them ventured out to the bookstores and even consulted our state and national conventions only to find one thinly prepared work specifically for them. To my dismay, that booklet did no more than wet their spiritual appetites.Knowing they wished for more, I have taken pen in hand, and seek in this work to broaden the available literature of this worthy ministry. The Ministry Of A Deaconess is an outgrowth of satisfying the hunger and thirst for the righteous and practical ministry on the part of the deaconess at The Philadelphia Fellowship (Baptist). Recognizing that deaconess in The Philadelphia Fellowship (Baptist) are not the only ones in a local church with that need, I trust this work will fill a void for you.The twenty-first century Church must be a biblically empowered church. The aim of this endeavor is to do just that, examine the wealth of knowledge contained in both the Old and New Testament and provide insight for faithful service. Though based in an historical/biblical review of deaconess, I felt the need to update the ministry deaconess traditionally perform. Meaningful ministry references are made to strengthen sisterhood and female empowerment. As outgrowths of these references, I am associating Deaconess as foremost leaders in Women's Ministries in the local church.This book is a pastoral gift first to the Deaconess of The Philadelphia Fellowship (Baptist), and then to all of the sisters whose hunger and thirst will be satisfied. After more than forty years in the pastoral ministry and having ministered, worked with and helped to shape ministers to be effective in their called and appointed ministries, I offer this book to the many Ministry Matrons known as Deaconess.Pastor Ronnie D. Pastor Ronnie D. Joyner. D.Min. answered his call to the gospel ministry and delivered his initial sermon, March 31, 1974. 2014 marked his 40th year in the Ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ. He has served in the pastoral ministry since November 1975 serving Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Chesapeake, VA; Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church Norfolk, VA; and planting the Philadelphia Fellowship (Baptist) in June 2000. Dr. Joyner is a 1975 graduate of Norfolk State University Bachelors of Arts Political Science, a 1978 graduate of the School of Theology-Virginia Union University Master of Divinity and a 1983 graduate of the Howard University's School of Religion Doctor of Ministry. Dr. Joyner has begotten 35 Sons & Daughters in the Gospel Ministry and recently completed a 12 month sabbatical at Boston University looking at Divorce Among African American Clergy during the Sabbath in the City Series. Dr. Joyner is a former writer of the Sunday School Publishing Board of the National Baptist Convention USA, former president of the Division of Clergy, Baptist General Convention of VA, former president of The Tidewater Metro Baptist Minister's Conference, and has been a featured speaker at Colleges, churches and convention settings in 35 states and in 5 foreign countries. Dr. Joyner enjoys Adjunct Professor Status at both Virginia Union University School of Theology and Hampton University Religious Studies Program. He has authored 8 books: Breaking Free From Financial Bondage; The Year of Jubilee Family Legacy Ministry; The Power of Prayer; Actions of Healthy Leaders and Families as well as Biblical Leadership, Lessons in Family Development-Outskirts Press; Functioning As A Deaconess-Orman Press and The Bible Based Family-Beckham House Publishers. Pastor Joyner has been married since Nov. 1, 1974 to Lady Olliette, and during their 40+ Year of Marriage, they celebrate being the proud parents of two sons, both with degrees in Mass Communications Ron II, an Ordained Elder and Julian Leville, a Pastor, one daughter in law Trin'ea and their 1st grand daughter Reynah Trin'ea.
