The Microfinance Revolution

Overview

This CD-ROM contains the pdf files of the first two books of the three-volume collection, ""The Microfinance Revolution"". The work is aimed at a diverse readership - economists, bankers, policymakers, donors and social scientists; microfinance practitioners and specialists in local finance and rural and urban development; and members of the general public interested in development. The first volume, ""Sustainable Finance for the Poor"", focuses on the shift from governement- and donor-subsidized credit systems to self-sufficient microfinance institutions providing voluntary savings and credit services. The second volume, ""Lessons from Indonesia"", examines many financial institutions, with a special emphasis on Bank Rakyat Indonesia's microbanking system which in the mid-1980s was transformed from a failed subsidized credit programme to a nationawide commercial financial intermediary that now profitably provides microfinance services to more than 20 million people. Commercial microbanking remained stable and profitable in Indonesia even as the country's financial system collapsed during the recent crisis. This volume shows why and offers crucial lessons for developing countries everywhere.
