Overview

After Hurricane Iniki slammed the Hawaiian island chain in the late summer of 1992, a historical artifact of great military importance, dating back to World War II, was exposed on a dry riverbed, west of the remote and sparsely populated Kaupo district in Maui. The newly discovered rusting vessel of war prompted the federal government to assemble a band of explorers to investigate the anomaly. Nobody at the time, however, had ever expected that the team would find much more than they had bargained for when they encountered the remnants of a hostile Paleolithic tribe of cannibals who had been successfully hiding in the shadows of modernity for a thousand years! Far removed from the encroachment of civilization, the Stone-Age tribe of hunters was certainly none too pleased to stumble upon a group of modern humans, who were an immediate existential threat to their secluded village and traditional way of life! Would there be casualties when these two vastly different subsets from a species known as Homo sapiens collided head-on in an atmosphere of hateful fear and suspicion?

A native of Houston, Donald W. Hill, MD, FACP, graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, in 1978. After completing his medical school training at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 1982, Dr. Hill did postgraduate training in internal medicine, hematology, and oncology at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque through 1987. At the time he wrote this novella, Dr. Hill had completed over thirty-five years of medical practice that included working in multispecialty clinics, solo practice, and everything in between, including academia and clinical research. A fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Hill is a published scholar and the author of two other recently published works of fiction, including the DNR TRILOGY and the VAMPIRO TRILOGY. Dr. Hill crafted this work of fiction soon after returning to the mainland after working several years in Maui and on the Big Island in Hawaii.Dr. Hill's specific goal was to formulate a plausible historical explanation for what may have happened to the tribe of diminutive warriors, known as the Menehune, who were likely present on the Hawaiian island chain long before the arrival of the Polynesian people from Tahiti who migrated to this tropical paradise about 1,000 years ago.If the author was indeed successful in this endeavor, the reader will be the final arbiter to opine if this lofty goal was achieved. In the meantime, if one is so inclined to take a hike into a deeply remote Hawaiian tropical forest, just be careful. Assuredly, a modern explorer wouldn't want to end up on a cannibalistic tribal menu! After all, the Menehune might still be out there...
