Cultural development, the arts and literacy are important factors in her work. She continuously strives to develop new strategies that are effective for struggling readers. Her absolute affinity for literature, especially poetry, propels her to teach and constantly learn. Jones has written several poetry books and plays. Her previous work has been included in Poemhood: Our Black Revival, an anthology of poetry for young adults featuring 35 acclaimed poets including Kwame Alexander, Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Nikki Giovanni (just to name a few). Jones is also the founder of SPEAK TO ME Books, a publishing platform where others can publish their work. She attributes her early love of reading, writing, and the arts to her parents. They made it possible for her to experience and live life creatively. She is also a certified Double Dutch Aerobics Instructor. Her passion revolves around how to make life better for youth inside and outside of the classroom. Michalyn's love for literacy spurs from her childhood, where she learned to love the library and reading time with her family. For more than two decades, Darlene has captured relatable subject matter through lively, stylized human forms and bright expressive acrylic colors, mixing humor with positive images and bringing them to life. Holding a dual bachelor's degree in Business Management and the Arts from Dillard University and an MFA in Illustration from The Savannah College of Art and Design, Darlene skillfully transforms the ordinary into whimsical joy. She has illustrated a number of children's books, has worked with the Memphis community on a variety of public mural projects, and she is creating and producing an animated television series, Orange Mound Bound. In addition to having her work added to private collections throughout the U.S. and Singapore, her work is in the permanent collections of the Na-tional Civil Rights Museum, The Shelby County Building of the City of Memphis, The Memphis Theological Seminary, Porter Leath and the Memphis Public Libraries.
