Overview

Take a peek into the eyes of our future...and be encouraged. The Me I See in You is a testament to the commitment, dedicated educators and caring communities have in changing the trajectory of young lives. In it, you'll meet graduates with incredible stories and extraordinary outcomes, thanks to the academic, emotional, and social resources provided by EYM and a caring core base of teachers, mentors, family, friends, funders, and the EYM board of directors. When asked what I see on the horizon for our youth, I see in my youth the essence of what it is to be human, to dream, do the work, to love, and forgive with grace. Through tears, triumphs, disappointments, successes, failures, inequities, biases, and racism, I see a world full of hope because our youth with guidance and support will not waiver. They will continue to strive to be and share their best selves with unlimited potential. I think not only of these former students but each child that has come across my path and the me I see in each of them! -Angeles Echols This former student is a little chocolate beauty who was once teased, but now with an MD and master's degree, is a role model for young Black women and girls. Soon after I met this EYM alum she rolled her neck and eyes at me and adamantly told us what she was and was not going to do at EYM... I smiled and asked her mom to leave the room. (What was said in that room, we will never tell.) This EYM graduate sat at my desk and reviewed EYMs' online programming, discovered flaws, said Don't cry, Ms. Echols, I can fix this, and built EYMs' online interactive platform, Access/No Excuse (ANE). This former student built the teacher, student online tutorial component of (ANE) while attending Cal Tech and teaching at EYM part-time. When you look upon a child whose eyes have already begun to dim due to deferred hope don't speculate on how long it will take before the light is completely extinguished-find a way to set it ablaze.

Author Information

Author Angeles Echols is a passionate educator, visionary leader, and fierce advocate for the academic, emotional, and professional development of at risk, low-income, marginalized children of color. Her compelling journey started with a move to New York City from Cornell University where substitute teaching helped pay her bills while she landed roles in off Broadway productions and bus and truck tours. These early years in education paved the way for her move to Los Angeles in the mid 1980's for film and television roles. She found part-time roles while teaching, tutoring and mentoring at-risk youth, her true calling. It was by tutoring kids in her one-bedroom apartment on Wilton Boulevard that she realized she could find more meaning and have a greater impact. Her vision and leadership in the development of Educating Young Minds (EYM) an after-school tutorial and enrichment program and Access/No Excuse (ANE), an education, career guided digital platform, reshaped the way EYM students were educated post pandemic, providing 24/7 on-line access to a STEM based curriculum in English and Spanish. Its unique innovation distinguishes itself from other programs by also providing career resources to empower and engage her students to complete their studies and provide pathways to future careers. Her faith, prayers, and determination enabled her to coalesce the networks of family; friends; and community, foundation, and corporate leaders she had nurtured for more than 35 years. Hugh A. Williams is an American photographer of Jamaican and Cuban descent, born in New York City. The youngest of four children, he developed a fascination with photography while visiting family members' homes filled with photographs, some dating back to the early 1920s. In time, he intuitively understood the power of photographic images to communicate, empower and influence history. These collections of photographs made up an extraordinary pictorial narrative of his family, comprising of members living at all levels of the spectrum in class and culture be it in Jamaica, BWI, The United Kingdom, Cuba or the USA all bound by the common mantra, Do not bring shame to the family name. These images and the stories behind them gave him insight into the duality of human nature, the reality of life we live and the facade we show to the world.Hugh's career as a photographer began in 1982. He was inspired to study photography after receiving a Nikon Nikkormat El 35mm camera. He took photography classes, learned the fundamentals of developing film and retouching negatives. Later, attended the Germain School of Photography and earned a Certificate in Commercial Photography 1982. In 1994 received an Associates of Arts in Photography from Los Angeles, City Community College and in 2002 a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a minor in Film production from California State University, LA, in 2003 he was excepted, in the Cal State LA masters of fine arts program.Known for his striking environmental photographs of attorneys, executives and politicians. His work has appeared in major news publications including The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Newsweek, Zuma Press, Black Enterprise and The Los Angeles Daily Journal. His work at the Los Angeles Times and The Daily Journal, the largest legal publication on the West Coast, is where he honed his personal style as a photographer. He uses techniques that quickly put his subjects at ease, while capturing their personal side. With assignments throughout the US, United Kingdom and France Hugh has won numerous awards including the Los Angeles Press Club's highest honor for Magazine Photography in 2002.
