OverviewThe Match Dart Mindset explains simple, effective mental strategies and focusing techniques used by expert players, so you can thrive in matches regardless of how long you've been playing, or the level you compete at. Pressure-proofing your mindset means seeing more you-on-a-good-day performances in matches, not just at the practice board. You'll learn how to play with relaxed focus, enjoy the game for what it is and - as we all know - a happy darts player is a winning darts player. A robust mental game is essential in competitive darts. Unmanaged thoughts and emotions lead to inconsistency. Tightening up becomes more pronounced the more we overthink and increasingly messes with performance. Tension is caused by overthinking and can stem from both stress and excitement. Stress comes from the pressure to perform, while excitement can follow a 9-darter or an impressive checkout. One is clearly a better problem to have than the other but both disrupt an otherwise reliable, well-practised throw and knock you off your stride. Distractions happen when playing in public - whether that's down the pub, at Youth Academy, or at tournaments. So not being able to bring your practice game to matches is a common problem. Performance dips can become more pronounced the deeper you get into a match, as perceived pressure increases. You may start well, only to be hijacked by tension creeping into your throw at the most important moments, such as set dart or match dart. Common problems this book helps you overcome: Getting psyched out against lower-ranked players for fear of embarrassment or letting yourself down Getting psyched out against higher-ranked players by mentally deciding they'll win before you throw your first dart Losing focus and concentration Being affected by nerves and adrenaline in matches - sweating, shaking hands, feeling twitchy, or uptight Repeated tough experiences leading to stress, embarrassment and even avoiding public play altogether Feeling the weight of others' expectations, such as ""My team/parents/coach/partner/manager/sponsor want me to win"", ""I used to be higher ranked"", or ""As a darts coach, I'm expected to play perfect darts"" Feeling the weight of your own high expectations - ""I should average a certain number"", ""I should win easily"", or ""I should hit doubles every time"" Dartitis (the yips) Performance slumps Playing under pressre If you've experienced any of the above - or if you coach or are a parent to someone who has - then it's time to get busy pressure-proofing your mindset for match day. ""The book is an easy read and is very insightful as to how and why your body reacts to different situations and explains simple things you can do to overcome issues. I would highly recommend it!"" - Lorraine Winstanley - Former World No. 1 & World Master. PDPA Coach.
