The Master of the College Nurse is the first title in a new series of compact books by The Erotic Print Society entitled Great British Erotic Art. Centred on a recently discovered cache of drawings carried out for the 'erotic underground' market of the 1950s, or possibly for the artist's own entertainment, this book shows that, yes, the Brits did have sex between 1945 and 1963. The title refers to the name of the artist: 'There is no doubt that we are dealing with one of the great lost talents of British erotic art and we have called him The Master of the College Nurse , in the same way that anonymous old master painters were similarly named,' says the foreword. These explicit (some would say pornographic) drawings are accompanied by an account of the sexual exploits of the title's heroine, the voluptuous Nurse Pam Craig: seductress, blackmail-victim, sex icon and martyr to a promiscuous lust that renders the word 'nymphomaniac' obsolete. The drawings have a 1950s charm and style that, in addition to the artist's strong graphic signature, seem to indicate that they have survived for a reason: any imagery or photography more dangerous than the sanitized, airbrushed versions permitted by the moral watchdogs of the day was pounced upon with dire consequences for those who circulated such 'filth'. Consequently very little remains of that period's illegal, 'underground' erotica that was sometimes of a surprisingly high quality. The Master of the College Nurse drawings are a case in point and make a valuable contribution to the small archive of comparable art and literature already unearthed from this period. Great British Erotic Art will be a series of hardbacked, 100-page plus, compact format books, approx 17.5 by 15.5, priced at GBP 12.50. This eminently collectable series will seek out British erotic art, photography and even individuals from the past and today, building to a small library that will be essential to connoisseur and amateur alike.
