Author Information

MICHAEL LAWRENCE FLEISHER was a writer known for his DC Comics of the 1970s and 1980s, particularly for the characters Spectre and Jonah Hex. Michael also wrote three volumes of The Encyclopaedia of Comic Books Heroes. His first story published in 1972 “Death at Castle Dunbar” in Secrets of Sinister House #5. Went on to write for House of Mystery and House of Secrets. He scripted Shade, the Changing Man in the late 1970s, and contributed to the Batman mythos in the early 1980s. He was responsible for writing the origin of The Penguin. ROY THOMAS joined Marvel as a writer and editor under Stan Lee, scripting key runs of nearly every Marvel title: The Amazing Spider-Man, The Avengers, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, The Sub-Mariner, Thor, The X-Men and more. He wrote the first ten years of Marvel’s Conan the Barbarian and Savage Sword of Conan; and launched the Defenders, Iron Fist, The Invaders and Warlock. At DC, he developed All-Star Squadron, Infinity Inc. and related titles, proving instrumental in reviving the Golden Age Justice Society of America. He co-scripted the sword-and-sorcery films Fire and Ice and Conan the Destroyer. Throughout it all, Thomas has edited the award-winning magazine Alter Ego, contributing heartily to the research and history of the medium. Pete Sanderson is a comics historian and critic, who was Marvel’s first official archivist. He is the author of the best-selling X-Men: The Ultimate Guide and co-author of The Marvel Encyclopedia and Marvel Chronicle. Peter was also one of the main writers of the first four versions of The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe. Matthew K. Manning is a comic book writer, historian, and fan. He has written many comics for Marvel and DC Comics, including Beware the Batman, Batman, The Batman Strikes!, Legion of Super-Heroes in the 31st Century, Spider-Man Unlimited, and Marvel Romance Redux. When not writing comics themselves, he writes books about the comic book medium and its rich history. Based in North Carolina.
