After an elementary school has closed for the day, a dangerous monster comes out of the school's swimming pool looking for food. He eats marshmallows and goes back in the water. When Halo arrives at school, she accidentally slips on something gooey and hits her head. A boy named Cody comes to her rescue, but he is highly allergic to the ingredients in marshmallows, and she rushes him to the nurse's office. Complaints are made to the principal about the marshmallows being stolen every night from the kitchen. During swimming practice Cody, is pulled under water and can not be found. Halo realizes she needs to find a way to rescue Cody. She goes to school late that night and goes to the pool area where she runs into the monster. After eating some of her Aunt Pandora's candy she turns into Princess Puffer fish. Realizing that a puffer fish may not be able to save the day she eats more candy and becomes an electric eel and eventually turns into a hammerhead shark and saves the day. At the end of the book, there is a mini biography of the author, illustrator, and the super villain, a glossary, Princess Puzzlers, Discussion Questions, and Writing Prompts. This is a delightful story written in graphic format. Graphic format is favorites of mine! It makes it perfect for students who are reluctant readers and never seem to finish a book on their own. It is also perfect for those who want to have many illustrations in the story. Children will really enjoy this book. 2010-- Children's Literature Comprehensive Database Summary: There's something fishy going on at Halo's school - the boy's swimming team members keep disappearing! When Halo goes to uncover what is going on, she finds herself head to head with one hungry mermaid. And she's not satisfied with just marshmallows anymore. Will Halo be eaten as well or can she use her candy to defeat the evil mermaid? Review: Another great adventure in the Princess Candy series. I like how this superhero is just another kid who was given the gift of some superpowers. And she doesn't have to be burdened with them all of the time. If she needs something, she just eats a piece of the candy and she has a new superpower. What a handy thing these candies are! Again, there are some great resources in this book for teachers - the discussion questions, writing prompts and glossary. Students will again get a kick out of the Villain Facts and more Princess Puzzlers! This book is another great looking graphic novel that will appeal to children. http: //www.bookworminginthe21stcentury.com/2010/01/princess-candy-graphic-novels.html-- Bookworming in the 21st Century Blog
