Reviews

""Very occasionally a new book appears which at a stroke alters the landscape of Cornish history. This is one of those moments... a distinguished work which should sit on the shelves of all those interested in Cornwall's 'great emigration'. It will also be warmly welcomed as an important comparative study by all students of emigration from the British Isles and Europe in the 19th century."" Philip Payton, Emeritus Professor of Cornish & Australian Studies, University of Exeter and Professor of History, Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia.

Author Information

Lesley Trotter is a social historian, genealogist and writer. Following on from her master's degree, she gained her PhD in Cornish Studies at the University of Exeter for her thesis on the experiences of wives 'left behind' by emigrating Cornish miners in the 19th century. She is an Associate of the Institute of Cornish Studies, and also holds an Undergraduate Advanced Diploma in Local History from the University of Oxford. With a background in journalism, before undertaking postgraduate studies, Lesley combined independent historical and genealogical research with work on a wide range of projects in the scientific press, business communications and interactive training.
