Overview

"""...A compassionate companion, providing solace and support to those who might feel lost or adrift due to the absence of a father figure."" - Alan Steelman, Former US Congressman, Texas Growing up without a dad is tough. When a boy grows up without a dad, some lessons go untaught; some experiences don't happen; and most particularly, the boy doesn't feel the love from a man that he needs. Young men without dads have to overcome self-doubt, fear, and being fatherless in a sea of societal skepticism towards masculinity. The Map to Manhood is a series of actions and activities designed to guide the young man who doesn't have the benefit of a loving in-home father. Four paths make up the journey; they are: Self-discipline Relationships Love Purpose Throughout the book there are links to videos and other resources, along with tables, worksheets, and places to record your experiences, thoughts, and ideas on your journey to manhood."

"""I just want to say thank you for the content you make! When I was seven, my dad walked out on us after years of abuse. Right now, I feel pretty good, and you have played a big part in it. More than one night [I sat] next to the train tracks trying to find the courage to step out. But one day I saw one of your videos and I thought I would follow you and see what happens. I can't remember which one of your videos it was, but it made me just try to deal with my emotions in a healthy way. I feel so much better, and I truly believe I wouldn't have done that without you. Thank you so much!"" -Anonymous follower of mystepdad.org"

Author Information

Growing up without a dad in the home has challenges. James learned this firsthand, having been raised by a single mother as the youngest of five kids. Many challenges are practical in nature, but the deepest challenges are emotional. James wasn't aware of how significant those challenges were until well into adulthood. While James was a teenager, there were a number of positive adult male role models that came into his life to fill the void of an absent father. One of them was Mark Gould. In many ways, Mark became a surrogate dad to James, opening his home, taking him camping, and even showing him how to ride a motorcycle and change the brakes on his mother's car.To pay Mark's kindness forward, as well as others', James started a non-profit organization, a YouTube channel, and an Instagram page to help young men growing up without their dads. James and his wife Suzanne have raised five children of their own, all of whom are now adults. Growing up in a single parent home, James has tremendous admiration and respect for those mothers who find themselves raising children by themselves. He also has deep empathy for kids growing up without a dad in their day-to-day lives. You can learn more at https: //www.youtube.com/c/MyStepdad or mystepdad.org.
