Overview

The legendary Johnny Cash's remarkable story is captured in this exclusive authorized biography. The Master of Life's been good to me. He has given me strength to face past illnesses, and victory in the face of defeat. He has given me life and joy where others saw oblivion...Life and love go on. Let the music play.-Johnny Cash One of the most influential figures in American music and pop culture, Johnny Cash is an icon to people of all ages. In Cash's first-ever authorized biography, author Steve Turner sifts the man from the legend and presents a picture of the often contradictory figure with unflinching honesty. A poor sharecropper's son from Arkansas, Cash embarked in the 1950s on a music career that took him to the heights of fame and wealth but also to the depths of addiction and despair. From these tensions Johnny Cash created a haunting music, exploring the dark side of himself, and others, in a voice that sometimes sounded as old as the Grand Canyon. The Man Called Cash chronicles his career, his love for June Carter Cash, his struggles, and his triumphs. Johnny Cash put his soul into his music, drawing on his demons, his faith, his pain, and his joy to become, to many, the voice of truth.

Reviews

Linn's deep, gravelly voice, which mirrors Cash's own voice, is perfect for the narration...For Cash fans and fans of country and rock music, this will have great appeal. -- Kliatt Johnny Cash's storytelling songs, revealing a mix of faith and worldly temptations, have a power that has spanned generations, influencing both rock and country musicians. Rex Linn does a good job reading this often-compelling biography...an interesting portrait of the man behind the music. -- AudioFile An affecting mosaic of oral history, poetry and memoir--concerning Cash himself, but also the era in which his music took root and thrived. -- Publishers Weekly In what may be the most admirable of its many achievements, it's as good as Cash deserves. -- Rolling Stone Johnny Cash was unquestionably one of the most gifted and unusual men I ever knew. My wife Ruth and I considered Johnny and June two of our dearest friends, and we miss them both deeply. In this highly readable biography, Steve Turner vividly captures the remarkable story of Johnny's life, from beginning to end--a life marked by repeated struggles and successes. Most of all, it was a life marked by great faith in Jesus Christ--a faith that carried him through difficulties that would have overwhelmed a lesser person. Johnny Cash comes alive in this book, and you will be a better person for having read it. -- Billy Graham
