OverviewExcerpt from The Lyon Phonetic Manual In many respects the eye is superior to the ear, and is capa ble of recognizing nicer distinctions. This is illustrated in a comparison of the powers of the eye and the ear, in the de tec'tion of shades of color on the part of the one, and in the detection of pitch on the part of the other. It seemed, there fore, that the deaf were not lacking in ability to perceive and apprehend visibly represented speech sounds, but were in need of a more perfect mode of representing such sounds. If only a method could be discovered whereby their dexterity in representing sounds would be made commensurate with their power of perceiving them, the greatest possible facility for the interchange of thought would be attained.
