OverviewThe Lost City of the Monkey God The True Story of a Forgotten Ancient Civilization in Honduras Book Preview: La Ciudad Blanca, as it goes by its original name, is situated not far from Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve, on the Caribbean Coast of Honduras. This protected area spreads on 5,250 km and it covers the whole course of the river Platano, from its source in the mountains to the sea shore. The reserve encompasses large sections of tropical rainforest, but also patches of savannah and wetlands, alongside with spectacular lagoons. Besides its scenic beauty, it offers shelter to highly endangered animal species, such as the Mexican Spider Monkey or the Central American Tapir. The wildlife includes a variety of river birds, as well as macaws and toucans. The conservation of this valuable area has been threatened in the last decades by illegal hunting, fishing and especially deforestation. That is why, in 1996, it was designated as World Heritage in Danger. After the implementation of a new management plan for the reserve in 2000, the situation seemed to improve, registering a decrease in the danger by 2006. However, only five years later, it was placed by UNESCO back on the List of World Heritage in Danger.
