An excerpt from the Author's Preface: THIS little book is placed before the public For the purpose of giving, in a concise form, an introductory view of the principal languages and dialects of the world, as they appear in print; and at the same time, to aid in the cultivation of religious thought, and the adoration of the Supreme Being. We have endeavored to gather from many distant countries, and bring within the reach of all, what we feel must prove universally interesting knowledge; but which has so far as we know, hitherto been comparatively hidden from the majority of people and only obtainable in large and expensive foreign volumes. Undoubtedly many, even learned men, will discover something pleasing and gratifying in the present little volume, and it is hoped it may find a place in every household in the land and whenever referred to, that it will be found attractive, instructive and curious.
