Overview

The Lord's prayer is both a form and a model. As a form it is equally adapted to private and to public worship. It ought to be taught to little children among the first lessons of devotion. But it should not be put aside with childish things. No degree of intelligence or fervor can render it unsuitable. It ought to be repeated at the family altar and in the public assemblies of the church. To a mind unprejudiced by the abuses of superstition and formalism such frequent use of it would naturally be suggested by reverence for the wisdom and authority of its divine Author....
