Overview

This fourth volume of The Triple Knowledge series covers Lord's Days 17-20 of the Heidelberg Catechism and explains Christ's state of exaltation following the order of the Apostles' Creed. Herman Hoeksema dwells extensively on the fact, the meaning, and the central significance of the resurrection. He finds in it a threefold profit for believers, to whom Christ imparts all the blessings of salvation. He makes us partakers of the righteousness he has purchased by his death. By the power of his resurrection, Christ raises us up to a new life. By the power of his resurrection we are in principle partakers of the life of heaven. The author next sets forth the Reformed doctrine of the ascension in contrast to that of the Lutherans, and explains the threefold advantage of Christ's ascension for God's people. In keeping with the theme of the Christian's profit, Hoeksema explains the significance of Christ's sitting at the right hand of God. In Christ's session the profit for God's people is that Christ pours out heavenly graces on them, as well as defending and preserving them against all enemies. He then finishes his discussion of Christ's exaltation with an explanation of the comfort that Christians find in the exalted Christ's future judgment of the living and the dead. Still following the order of the Apostles' Creed and the Catechism, Hoeksema concludes this volume by elucidating the doctrine of the Holy Spirit both as the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Christ as he was poured out into the New Testament church on Pentecost.
