OverviewThe Long Island Railroad is the busiest commuter railroad in the United States, and the oldest railroad still operating under its original name. The railroad operates seven days a week with service and branches from Manhattan in New York City to Montauk on the eastern tip of Long Island. The LIRR was formed in 1834 and from 1868 to 1998 the railroad was policed by the Long Island Railroad Police Department, with much of the police operations taking place within the City of New York.
