Overview

The Llangollen Canal Through Time is a pictorial historical look at what is now Britain's favourite holiday cruising waterway. Completed in 1811 by engineers Josiah Jessop and Thomas Telford as part of the Ellesmere Canal, it later became part the Shropshire Union canal network. Since attempted closure after the Second World War, the 46-mile line from Nantwich in Cheshire running through Shropshire into the Welsh mountains at Llangollen has become known as the Llangollen Canal. With the revival of waterways for leisure it has become a popular destination. An outstanding part of its route are the famous aqueducts at Chirk and Pontcysyllte, the latter being one of `the wonders of the waterways' and both now in the length appropriately designated as a World Heritage Site. The author has not only operated boats on this canal but has cruised its waters regularly and extensively. He has studied its history and photographed its route over the years in considerable detail. He has also campaigned for its future development.
