Overview

"During the 1970s, Bernadine Stetzel and her husband Fred were quite active in local and state politics. When Senator John Glenn and his wife Annie campaigned in the Stetzel's home town in Ohio, Bernadine created a painting of this event and eventually presented it to the Glenns. The Senator and Annie not only became fans of her work, but a lasting friendship was born between them. Bernadine greatly admired both the Glenns. In particular she was inspired by Annie's personal challenges in overcoming her long-time stuttering, which compelled her to write ""The Little Girl Who Stuttered"" in hopes of sharing Annie's story with countless others who were facing challenges of their own."

"Bernadine Stetzel was a self-taught, American primitive artist. Painting since the age of twelve, Stetzel's work has both a personal and historical significance as she records in oils and watercolors, both past and current events. Stetzel received numerous awards for her artwork, including a second place award from the Toledo Museum of Art's Area Artist's Exhibition for her print, John F. Kennedy Ticker-Tape Parade, in New York City. Her work has been exhibited in numerous one-woman shows throughout the country. A documentary on Mrs. Stetzel's artwork, ""Memory Painting: the Art of Bernadine Stetzel"" was produced by Bowling Green State University and broadcast on PBS stations in Ohio. Her paintings can be found in private collections both in the United States and abroad. She illustrated ""Remembering JFK,"" and wrote and illustrated the children's books: ""Rainbow"" and ""Valentine,"" as well as illustrating versions of Charles Dickens' ""A Christmas Carol"" and Clement C. Moore's ""The Night Before Christmas."" She passed in August 2016."
