OverviewExcerpt from The Life of Sir Stamford Raffles When I learnt the name of the clergyman, on reaching that stage in the illness which is the deceptive convalescence between the worst stage of the fever and its after-consequences, I asked him, Are you any relative of one of my heroes, Stamford Raffles Having received the information that he was, being the grandson of Sir Stamford's most intimate cousin, the subject of his career naturally formed a great part of our conversation during the remainder of my brief stay in the hospital. I then found that Mr. Raffles had, in 1887 - 88, gone through the same records at the India Office as I had inspected two years earlier; but in his case he had examined and copied many of them with the special object of writing a biography of his cousin, whereas I had only noted their existence in the course of my work of classification. At the time stated Mr. Raffles fully intended writing his cousin's Life, but several years before our meeting be had abandoned it in order to devote all his time to the reading necessary for taking orders. When we met, he had finally laid aside the intention Of writing a biography, although he none the less deplored the want of a complete and effective Life of Sir Stamford Raffles, which the Memoir by Lady Raffles is certainly not, although it contains much Of permanent value.
