At a time when philosophers and theologians have ample opportunity to present their understandings of Augustine's thought, no small benefit will come from spending time with the historical research found in the life of Augustine by Louis Sebastien, Le Nain de Tillemont, an eminent historian of the seventeenth century. He is known as an historian who was so thorough and accurate in his scholarship that he can still be consulted with profit. That is especially true of his 'La vie de saint Augustin' where historical detail is so essential for correct understanding. (Allan D. Fitzgerald, O.S.A., Villanova University)
