The Life and Work of Samuel Rutherford Crockett

Overview

In 'The life and work of S.R.Crockett', Dr Islay Donaldson rescues Crockett from the inaccurate appellation 'Kailyarder.' She examines his Galloway roots, his time in Edinburgh as student and journalist, his continental travelling, his Free Church ministry and his decision to become a full time writer. As well as the biographical detail, Dr Donaldson delves into Crockett's thematic concerns. She considers the varied styles he adopted in his fiction, paying attention to his vividness and vigour and the humour which tempered his romance, exploring his character in life and in his writing, to reveal his strengths, and weaknesses. This new edition includes a chapter previously left out of the first edition- on Crockett's writing for children - which reveals even more clearly the realism underlying his romance and shows how he fits into his contemporary writing scene and can rightly claim his place alongside the other great writers of the late 19th century. Islay Donaldson was born in Dundee and educated at Berwick-on-Tweed, Dumfries Academy, Edinburgh University and the Queen's University of Belfast. She taught in schools and further education including university level and adult education. In middle age she returned to Edinburgh University as a student (at the same time as her daughter) and her PhD was awarded for a thesis on S.R.Crockett. This formed the basis for S.R.Crockett, his life and works, first published in 1989. She died in April 2014. Her work on S.R.Crockett is still the only substantial biography of this neglected Scottish writer and as such remains as valid and vital today as it was on first publication nearly 30 years ago.
