Such was the account of this transaction, which Bernard, in a long letter, laid before the Pope. This first letter was rapidly followed up by others, his wrath and indignation waxing even hotter; indeed, during the whole course of his life he never used more excited and unmeasured language than he did in this matter. Two things are evident: (1) that his appeal to Kome in the first instance was taken but little notice of; (2) that he was determined no one of whom he did not completely approve, should sit in the see of Langres. He declares that a multitude of saints will be put to confusion, if this yoke be thrust on them; that they will bear it as they would bear compulsion to bend the knee to Baal, or, in the words of the prophet, to make a covenant with death, and with hell to conclude an agreement. He says gold and silver have prevented his appeal to law, reason, and equity from being heard; and asserts, at last, that if his opponents do not desist from their wicked...
