Overview

The Liebling Haus in Tel Aviv was built in 1936 to designs by architect Dov Karmi for Tony and Max Liebling after they fled from Europe. With its bright plaster facades, deep balconies, clear proportions, and a layout tailored to the regional climate, it serves as a prime example of the locally adapted International Style that is typical of the White City of Tel Aviv. From 2015 to 2019, the building was extensively restored by Israeli and German planners, renovation experts, and craftspersons, reopening as a cultural and research center devoted to urbanism and architecture from a multidisciplinary perspective. The book, published in three languages, tells the eventful history of the structure and gathers detailed historical materials about its architecture and residents. Current interviews and an atmospheric tour by photographer Yael Schmidt showcase the new use of the Liebling Haus since its reopening. Sharon Golan ist Leiterin des Liebling LAB. Die in Deutschland geborene, israelische Denkmalarchitektin studierte Architektur im Bachelor am Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, erwarb einen Master an der Technischen Universität Berlin und einen weiteren in Restauration und Stadtplanung am Technion in Haifa. Mit ihrer Arbeit versucht Golan vor allem, Schnittstellen zwischen Nachhaltigkeit und Denkmalpflege zu schaffen. Derzeit gilt ihr Interesse der Entwicklung neuer Formate für einen ganzheitlicheren Wissens- und Erfahrungsaustausch zur Zukunft urbanen Lebens. Ellen Kugler ist Journalistin, Moderatorin und Leiterin der Geschäftsstelle Weiße Stadt Tel Aviv im Amt für Bundesbau in Rheinland-Pfalz. Sie studierte Politikwissenschaft, Geschichte und Geografie in Bonn, Frankfurt und Aberystwyth/Wales. Seit ihrem ersten Aufenthalt in Tel Aviv 2016 weiß sie: „In Israel muss man an Wunder glauben, um ein Realist zu sein."" Shira Levy Benyemini ist Mitgründerin des Liebling Haus und hat die künstlerische Leitung inne. Als Stadtplanerin, Stadtkonservatorin und Kuratorin konzentriert sie sich auf Prozesse der Regeneration, Community-Planung und Konservierung. Dabei untersucht sie die verschiedenen, miteinander verwobenen Facetten urbaner Transformation, insbesondere mit Blick auf kulturelle und künstlerische Aktivitäten.
