OverviewThrough surveying, non-intrusive fieldwork and the use of existing data, this study assesses the evidence for the Late Bronze Age/ Early Iron Age transistion in the Vale of Pewsey. A number of well preserved sites, many of them black-earth sites, were identified and surveyed for the first time and fragments of the Prehistoric landscape defined and discussed. The nature of subsistence systems in this area and period is discussed, as well as the formation and meaning of the black-earth sites. The apparent uniqueness of the concentration of sites in the Vale of Pewsey is considered by comparison with other areas of Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age activity in southern Britain.
