Overview

In the rugged Appalachian mountains, where coal mining is a way of life passed down through generations, Dale Rogers begins another graveyard shift at Elkhorn Mine #25, despite the grueling work that has taken a toll on his body after two decades underground. As Dale's ten-person crew puts in a late night's work deep within the earth, their worst fears are realized when the recent national news headlines become reality; North Korea has attacked the US. Nuclear strikes rain down upon Washington DC and the major cities along the East Coast of the US. The resulting EMPs affect the major news and media outlets, leaving the country in the dark. The strikes continue into the heartland, where coal is produced to create steel for the growing American infrastructure, something the country attacking the US doesn't have. Dale and his crew attempt to escape the deep, dark mine as the tremors shake the foundations, the result is a collapse of the mine, leaving the group trapped underground. They must rely on their skill-sets to try to save themselves, as they realize no one is coming for them. Emerging into a nightmare aboveground, Dale and those who remain find Appalachia has indeed been struck - the once-lush mountains reduced to smoldering rubble and fallout raining from the sky. The lucky few left alive face the chilling reality that life as they knew it is over. With limited supplies and no clear plan, the ragtag group of miners bands together to seek shelter from the escalating devastation. They bitterly realize that their unique skillset underground may prove vital to survival in the harsh new world above. Facing dwindling food and water, violent scavenger gangs, and the looming threat of radiation sickness, they must draw on every ounce of Appalachian grit and resilience. But even their resourcefulness may not be enough when a marauding enemy militia gets word of their underground sanctuary.

"Shar 5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2024 Verified Purchase This book truly hit home for me. Coming from a coal mining family and working at mine sites for many years myself, this book gripped me from the first chapter. By the third chapter, I was wiping tears away. This book, this book....you must read. If you ever worked in or around the mines, you'll ""feel"" this book. If you haven't, it will take you there, and you'll know the camaraderie among miners in the face of hardship and adversary. This may be a fictional account, but it's as real as real can be when it comes to the family of coal miners. Super job Author! LJB 5.0 out of 5 stars The strength of survival Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2024 This book pulls you in the the beginning to the end. I felt like I was there, trying to stay alive. After living in the area for over 40 years, I can testify to the strength of these people. Keeping each other alive, making sure that all have what they need to survive and prosper. I hope there will be more to come from the author. I highly recommend that everyone read this book. Look forward to the next installment. Cleanly written I'm even letting my 12 year old grandson read it. I take pride in my roots, having been raised in the Appalachian Mountains in the small coal town of Jenkins, KY. My father served in the USAF as a Vietnam Vet and later worked as a coal miner for nearly 20 years. My mother, an absolute angel, raised three rambunctious boys with immeasurable patience and love.I am a graduate of Jenkins High School and Morehead State University. My family includes two children, Lindsay and Peyton, and four bonus children, Brayden, Channing, Joey, & Kaylie, with my wife, Nicole. We also share our home with four rescued pets.My career journey has primarily been in law enforcement. It began in 1993 with the Kentucky State Police. After serving the Commonwealth at Post 6 Dry Ridge and Post 13 Hazard, I finished the last seven years with Executive Security in Frankfort under Governors Beshear and Bevin. I retired from the KSP in 2017.Subsequently, I worked three years for the USPS before returning to law enforcement as a School Resource Officer for the Sheriff's Department in 2023. I wanted to provide an able body for the protection of those who cannot protect themselves against the evil that lurks in today's society.I never seriously considered writing until lately, and now I'm excited for you to follow my journey. From the bottom of my heart, I appreciate every moment of interest, even if it turns out not to be for you. Thank you for your support!
