The basic written language of menus & ingredients in Singapore, Malaysia & Indonesia is Malay. To this have been added contributions from Indonesian, Javanese, Balinese, other local languages, Chinese, Tamil, English, Dutch & Portuguese, to produce a rich regional vocabulary in the Latin alphabet. Although Chinese characters will be met with in relation to some regional dishes, they are generally also presented phonetically in Latin script, or in a completely or partially anglicized form (e.g. curry mee). This comprehensive dictionary with over 3000 entries has been especially compiled for travelers to the Far East, yet is of a size small enough to be taken anywhere you go. It will enable you to identify the meaning of local words rapidly (including those in Latinized Chinese), whether you happen to be in a restaurant, at a food stall, or in a market. As far as menus are concerned, your main initial approach should be to find the complete name of any dish, starting with the first word. Less frequently, you will need to look up some or all its component words selectively. Both methods are supported by this dictionary. Variations in local spelling are also given, to reduce difficulties in locating certain words or phrases.
