Cameron and Kulick bring together, for the first time, material from the fields of anthropology, communication studies, linguistics, medicine and psychology to present an examination of the role of sexuality in written and spoken language. Organised into thematic sections, the Reader addresses: early documentation of vocabulary used by male heterosexuals: including Gershon Legman's glossary of 1941, and later work on the existence of a discourse style signifying gay identity; the use of language by individuals to present themselves as gendered subjects; theories of heteronormativity (systems for regulating sexuality) and an exploration of what is considered as sexuality of the 'right' kind; the use of language to express sexual desire, and the processes of constraint in a variety of settings, and in both personal interaction and written genres.; Beginning by guiding students through early study in the field from the 1940s to the 1980s, where the focus is homosexual language and its difference from the heterosexual mainstream, the second part of the Reader expands the focus and moves away from generic labels of 'homosexual' and 'heterosexual', exploring contemporary issues and debates from the mid-1990s to the present and addressing linguistic diversity amongst different communities of practice.
