Overview

tom's breathtaking adventures continue in the Lady and the Squire - the sequel to terry Jones ' the Knight and the Squire. Having left his village in fourteenth - century England - tired of learning Latin and digging ditches - tom now finds himself in France employed as a squire to Henry, Duke of Lancaster. But tom s job seems to involve spending hours of daylight translating and transcribing letters in Latin and when an encounter with the Man in Black presents and opportunity to escape, tom again makes a dash for freedom. this time he is accompanied by the beautiful but troublesome Lady Emilia De Valois - and of course supported by his dear friend and ally Squire Alan . Love is in the air as tom dreams of tournaments to be won and distant lands to be travelled. But tom is called upon to use his great talents to help the starving people of France and with the giant Anton is persuaded to make a detour to visit none other than his Holiness the Supreme Pontiff, Pope Innocent VI.

Reviews

This action-packed tale for children is the sequel to The Knight and the Squire and charts the continuing adventures of Tom and Ann in 14th-century France. Tom's new job as a squire to Henry, Duke of Lancaster is rudely interrupted when he is kidnaped and thrown into jail. He comes face to face with a prisoner who is so hungry he'll eat anything. The humorously highbrow story unfolds, and with the help of the sanguine digressions of the narrator Tom, steadily tackles each problem as it arises. He falls in love with Emily, who persuades him to disguise himself as a ladies' maid - and is just about to make his escape when he is hauled in front of the Archbishop of Reims. He and Emily are forced to find new disguises - this time as peasants and they are ready to escape when the headstrong Emily spoils everything. Then out of the blue, Ann appears. Jones's second romping novel in this series is full of fun and facts. It is brought to life by the brilliant black and white illustrations of Michael Foreman. (Kirkus UK)
