OverviewThe Kravchenko Case contains a wealth of information, which is available to researchers and historians for the first time. Hundreds of FBI documents, which were won after a six-year lawsuit, and extensive interviews with Kravchenko's sons and associates, tells the story of a man who broke away from a repressive Soviet regime and defected to America. Kravchenko became disaffected with Stalinist Russia after he witnessed the large-scale starvation of the Ukrainian peasantry. However, his defection, and the publication of his memoir, I Chose Freedom, made him a target of Soviet Russia. An attack from the French Communist newspaper Les Lettres Francaises led to a court case which was dubbed`The Trial of the Century’. Kravchenko won the case, and struck an important blow against Stalinist Russia. About the Author Gary Kern is the author of A Death in Washington: Walter G. Krivitsky and the Stalin Terror.
