Overview

The kratom tree (scientific name Mitragyna speciosa) is a member of the coffee family and grows in the tropics. Its original range includes most of South Asia, including Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, and other nations in the region. Both a stimulant and a sedative, the leaves (or leaf extracts) have found use in medicine. In addition to relieving opiate withdrawal symptoms, it has been found to alleviate chronic pain and gastrointestinal issues. However, sufficient clinical studies of kratom are lacking to fully evaluate its health impacts. The FDA has not yet green-lighted its use in medicine.
