Overview

"This edition has colour photos throughout the book which makes the cost higher than the version with black and white photos. The story is identical. The kindle version is also identical. There has been a minor update at the end to the original version. The book is an account of a two year journey around Australia with her microlight aircraft in tow. Kathy born in New Zealand was West Australia's first female microlight licenced pilot. She achieved this at aged forty-eight . Read about her many challenges she had on this journey. The journey was in 2001 and 2002 and began in Collie in Western Australia. The story was written while on that journey. West Australia's TV channel GWN did a news feature on Kathy when she achieved her licence and commented thats she ""was one gutsy Lady!"" In the story, Kathy tells it like it was . Here are two snippets from that story. ........""Get ready to hold the trainer bars, if I ask you, as I am struggling to control the bar!"" I told Gary. We turned on to finals and at five hundred feet we were being bounced all over the place like a cork on the ocean. The wind- sock was pointing one way but we were being blown the opposite! We were being blown towards the trees to the right of the runway. Gary was quiet in the back. Later he told me he was shitting himself! Concentration on what I was doing took all my attention. ""Fly it to the ground,"" my instructor had told me so many times, ""should you encounter bad conditions.""......... ...........everything seemed to be OK when at about one hundred and fifty above ground level there was a loud bang and the motor went dead. ""What the shit!"" I thought........"

Author Information

Kathy was born in the Hokianga in New Zealand and spent her childhood growing up in the Waipoua Forest where her adventurous spirit developed. She became a teacher and spent most of her adult years teaching in New Zealand, England and Australia. She took up flying at the age of 38 and got her General Aviation licence when she was forty and became a grandmother in the same year. She has travelled extensively around the world and lived in Australia, England and Bali. She has three adult children and ten grandchildren. Kathy was inspired to fly from her father who did lessons when she was only nine years old. Kathy loves country music and did four years of community radio service as an announcer doing her own shows in Perth and York in Western Australia. Kathy refers to herself as The Kiwi bird who does fly.The Kiwi bird is now a rare bird in New Zealand and does not fly. The emu is also a flightless bird native to Australia, hence the inspiration for the title of her book. Kathy has also managed and owned a bed and breakfast in York where she loved to take guests for a fly around their 100 acre property. She owned two aircraft and this book centres mainly on the two year journey with the microlight around Australia. She ends the book with an update of her flying 12 years after that adventure. In August 2015 she returned to live in her hometown of Dargaville in NZ.
