OverviewTwo princes lead a war-broken people. One rules while the other serves in the shadows, haunted by encroaching death. Halavant overthrew his queen mother to save his people from slavery, and now she seeks his life. Yosyph acts as the new king's eyes and ears, but being invisible comes at great cost and his life is slipping away. To save his closest friend, Halavant travels to the land of the skin-carving Carani, leaving Yosyph to rule a troubled people despite his ill health and the nobles on the verge of rebellion. Unless Halavant can survive in the land of his enemies to find a cure and Yosyph can unite the frightened and starving people against a second war, both will die and their budding democracy will crumble under a new tyrant. Fantastic plot, action packed and fascinatingly complex characters. Rukshy Ng (Goodreads) This book has some of the most well developed and fleshed out characters I've ever read. They each have trials. They each have pitfalls. They each struggle and fail. They made me snort-laugh... This is a clean, beautiful read for all ages. I would recommend to my nephews and my grandmother for its stories of light and hope, trial and pain, action adventure, and the fleshed out characters who I wish I could meet. Georgia (Amazon review) The story is smooth-flowing and well-paced for readers who enjoy kingdom politics and treasonous acts, a pinch of magic, a race against time, and a happy ending. Erin Dydek (Goodreads) The book explores the themes of how to rule justly when tyranny would seem to accomplish more, self-sacrifice, and adventure... There are lovely spiritual lessons learned as well as compelling dilemmas posed. The characters are complex and have complex problems.... If you like noble-bright fantasy, I highly recommend this book to you. Lelia Rose I appreciated that there were no easy answers or pat happily-ever-afters where everyone's problems were solved, but the characters could still find joy and meaning, and the nation could still get (or at least move closer) to where it needed to be. Annie L Author InformationM.L. Farb is the author of exciting and inspiring novels for the whole family. Her writing has been compared to CS Lewis, Lloyd Alexander, and Shannon Hale.
