Overview

"Are you looking for a way to explain the disease of addiction to young children? Do you want a book that... Is a story of love and compassion? Has a vision of healing, health and happiness? You've found it! Late one night, Kathi Lockwood received a phone call from a family member. She heard a frantic voice: ""Please write a book to help me explain to Annie* why her father had to go away."" Six-year-old Annie's dad had just entered a rehabilitation center for addiction. With an aching heart, yet up to the challenge, Lockwood conceived the metaphor of the King and the Monster: a loving father who falls into the trap of addiction. When the King asks for help, Guardian angels, a wisdom tree, and Healing Helpers all aid him in his journey to health and his joyful reunion with his family. *fictitious name"

Reviews

"""In The King and the Monster, Kathi Lockwood offers a unique perspective as she brings her own journey of faith and passion to the writer's table. Her voice and message are in tune with the very real struggles that a family experiences when a member is facing a substance abuse problem. Even though her story is set in a fictional kingdom, children and caregivers alike will be able to relate to it in a fundamental way."" -Chelsea Markopoulos, Addiction Ed Counselor, MA, CAADC, LPC ""Kathi Lockwood writes with great insight and simplicity to lead her younger audience to an understanding of this monstrous disease [of addiction]...I trust this book will become a part of every school's library because the earlier society is introduced to the perils of addiction, the sooner we can begin to eradicate its pitfalls."" -Mary Pat Melvin, LSW, CDAC, MS"
