Overview

The Kennet & Avon Canal Through Time contains 180 photographs of the Kennet and Avon Canal, of which 90 are old photographs. Some printed in a sepia tone and some printed in full colour. These photographs are printed along side a contemporary full colour photograph which illustrates the same scene. The contrasting illustrations show how the area has changed and developed during the last 100 years. Although photography has been commonly in use only since the early years of the twentieth century the changes, particularly urban, have been considerable since then - especially the transition from industrial use to leisure pursuits. This book is a record of those changes and is sure to be of interest to canal enthusiasts everywhere.

Author Information

Clive Hackford was born in Devon and his keen interest in local history and heritage was inspired by his childhood in the countryside. After taking early retirement from a career at the Ministry of Defence and Arms Control in 1994 he became a volunteer curator of the Kennet & Avon Canal Trust Museum, a post he held for ten years. He is now retired from the Trust and currently enjoys travels on his boat and pursuing his heritage interests. His close proximity to the canal and involvement with the Trust has afforded him access to a rich archive of documents and photographs as well as a wealth of practical knowledge and insight into the waterway's history. Clive lives in Salisbury, Wiltshire.
