The Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland (Classic Reprint)

Overview

Excerpt from The Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland Coming within the historic period, we hail one of the fullest and most helpful descriptive surveys that have occupied the pages of our Journal. Mr. Henry S. Crawford has made a careful study of Irish crosses, and (not confining himself, like most workers, to the high crosses and carved slabs) has compiled a most extensive list of the rude and small, as well as the ornate, monu ments, so important to all interested in ancient Ireland and its Church. The outlines of the types of crosses should prove valuable to general students, as well as to specialists. In other notes, Mr. Crawford illustrates the fine cross of Bealin, county Westmeath, and the curious fish carving and inscribed tomb at Fuerty, county Ros common. The latter is, perhaps, the only Irish monu ment showing the fish - the once favourite anagram of our Lord, so familiar in the Catacombs, and not unrepre sented in Irish illuminations.
