The Journal of Sofi

Overview

The Journal of Sofi is about a 31-year-old BRCA1 gene carrier. Those with the gene have an increased risk for breast cancer and ovarian cancer. The story begins when she hears the result of a DNA test, and in this story she relates her experiences at the hospital. How will she cope with the possible removal of her breast and her ovaries? How and when does she tell her new love about her condition? It is a glimpse into the life of a young woman whose life will never be carefree, but for whom passion and joy for life will never be lost. Nicole van der Spek is 31-years-old and lives in Haarlem. She graduated with a degree in Cultural Anthropology in 2003, and her experience range from occupational therapy, outpatient worker, office manager, to web editor. Her passion for writing has been there all her life. When she learned that she was a gene carrier, she wrote weekly columns about her experiences on the website of the group Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer. In her spare time, she writes articles for the Breast Cancer Society.
