OverviewMykhaylo Borysovych Kupershteyn was born on September 17, 1947, in the town of Murovani Kurylivtsi in the Vinnitsa region. Since 1973, he has lived in the town of Bar with his wife, son, and daughter. He is an active member of the Jewish community in Bar and a citizen of Ukraine. This book, based on documented historical facts and personal childhood memories, offers a vivid portrait of shtetl life. It contains stories, maps, regional history, colorful characters, recipes, poems, old documents, an index of names, and nearly 400 photographs. Most of the book focuses on Kopaihorod, the shtetl where Kupershteyn grew up, located near Bar and Vinnitsa in Ukraine, with additional chapters devoted to his other ancestral towns of Sataniv and Murovani Kurylivtsi. Jews everywhere yearn to connect with their ancestral towns-their houses, synagogues, and stories-as well as with the friends and relatives who once lived in those places. This book is intended to preserve the memory of the Jewish shtetls of Kupershteyn's childhood, and of all our ancestors.
