OverviewThe year is 1948. After the refusal of the United States and its Western European allies to recognize Israeli independence, Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion sends a political rival of his on a secret mission: to secure Soviet backing in exchange for becoming a critical partner of Moscow. As a result, Israel becomes an extension of the Communist Bloc in the Levant and a menace to the US and its allies. For the next several years, people from around the world with ties to the region watch as the superpowers engage in a grim competition over the country's future. A battle-hardened Haganah intelligence officer sees the country go down a path he abhors. A Red Army officer who witnessed the horrors of the Eastern Front arrives in Israel to help its military prepare for another Arab onslaught and witnesses its political revolution firsthand. From the newsroom of the New York Herald Tribune, a writer observes both the turmoil in the region from afar and Washington's reaction at the same time. Israel's geopolitical and internal transformation changes the balance of power in the Middle East and leads to the region becoming one of the main battlegrounds of the Cold War.
