OverviewThe book is a pictorial feast of the aesthetic beauty, variety and exuberance of the tropical Iwokrama rain forest in Guyana, South America. The stunning landscapes and regal splendour of one of the four remaining extensive pristine forests in the world have been magnificently captured through the artistic skills and rich palette of Shirley Felts. The Foreword is by HRH, The Prince of Wales, Patron, Iwokrama International Centre for Rain Forest Conservation and Development. The Iwokrama International Centre for Rain Forest Conservation and Development. The Iwokrama International Centre for Rain Forest Conservation and Development, established in 1996, is an autonomous non-profit institution established by the government of Guyana and the Commonwealth. The Centre manages the nearly one million acre (371,000 hectare) lush, pristine, tropical Iwokrama Forest in Central Guyana, to demonstrate how tropical forests can be conserved and sustainably managed to bring lasting ecological, economic and social benefits to the indigenous communities living in and near the forest, the people of Guyana and to the world in general. The Iwokrama Forest is divided into a Wilderness Preserve and a Sustainable Utilisation Area. Among the sustainable enterprises in the Sustainable Utilisation Area are the harvesting of high value timber products and eco-tourism. The Iwokrama Forest sits within the broader Iwokrama ecosystem that is the homeland of the Makushi people in Guyana. This approximately 700,000 hectare area is in the heart of the Guiana Shield Frontier Forest, one of the four remaining extensive pristine forests left in the world (the other three being the Amazon, Congo and Papua New Guinea).
